Windows 7 support has ended, here's how to keep your computer secure and up-to-date
Windows 7 support has ended, on
2020-01-14. Basically what this means is that if you're still using it, you should probably stop using it, or patch it with ESU, or do something else to stay protected.
In this post we'll be going over some of the options you have, including:
- Upgrade to Windows 10.
- Switch to a Linux distro such as Ubuntu.
- Switch to a Mac, if you don't like the above.
- Modify your system to allow ESU patches.
- Unplug your Windows 7 computer from the Internet.
- Keep using your Windows 7 computer as-is and risk malware.
- Stop using desktop computers entirely.
We'll also go over some ways to stay secure, regardless of which of the above you choose.
LinusTechTips also has a great video on this topic, you may wish to check it out:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFHBBN0CqXk Upgrade to Windows 10
For many people reading this post, this is your best option.
Upgrading to Windows 10 is the only option that guarantees you can keep using
all of the latest software and playing
all of the latest Windows games. Many newer games, especially VR games, only support Windows 10 (and not Windows 7 or 8.1).
There is still some choices you can make of which version and edition of Windows you want. Windows 10 has various editions, including Home, Pro, Education, and Enterprise. Enterprise gives you the most control over your system, while Home gives you the least control over it, and Pro is somewhere in-between. Enterprise is not typically available to consumers, you have to go through a business. Education has the same feature set as Enterprise, but it is licensed for schools.
If you are in school, you should see if you are eligible for a license for Windows 10 Education. If not, see if you have a way to obtain a Windows 10 Enterprise license. If not, you can very likely
upgrade your Windows 7 or 8.1 installation for free. If none of those options work for you, and you need to pay for a new license, the Pro version is preferable to the Home version.
Aside from installing and activating manually, you could also just buy a new computer that comes with Windows 10.
The main downside to upgrading to Windows 10 is that it gives you less control over your system, with features such as auto-installing apps (not a problem on Enterprise and Education editions), forced updates, Cortana, and vastly more "telemetry" services. Even if you hate spying, Windows 10 still may be your best option simply due to the advantage of running all the latest AAA games.
Microsoft provides an official way to download Windows 10 here:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 If you need help installing a newer version of Windows, check out this guide:
https://www.reddit.com/techsupport/wiki/windowsinstallation Switch to a Linux distro such as Ubuntu
These days, Linux distros are truly a great alternative to Windows. Linux is very stable and secure, and does everything an average user wants, whether that be Facebook or writing essays. If you are a gamer, Linux has thousands of native games and many more are available via Proton, you can play the majority of games on Steam on Linux with no hassle.
If you play games with heavy DRM or anti-cheat, or play VR games, or frequently use Adobe products, Linux may not be a good option for you. But even if you do play those games or use those products, you also have the option of dual-booting, so that you can have both Windows and Linux installed at the same time. This post doesn't go too much into detail on Linux, since the below links are already great resources.
Most importantly, Linux is 100% free, so you can give it a try without any risks, and switch back to Windows whenever you wish.
For more information about switching to Linux, see this post on the Linux gaming subreddit:
https://www.reddit.com/linux_gaming/comments/edaq0s/guide_migrating_to_linux_in_2020/ When you are ready to install Linux, check out this guide:
https://www.reddit.com/techsupport/wiki/linuxinstallation If you'd like a more concrete guide, this PDF focuses specifically on setting up Ubuntu for gaming, including setting up drivers, Steam, and more, with a focus on dual-booting:
https://github.com/aaronfranke/Linux-tools/raw/masteubuntu-only/qsg.pdf Switch to a Mac
This is the only option that
requires you to buy new hardware, since MacOS only runs on Macs, and will not run on a non-Mac PC. Macs are great systems overall, they are very secure and are a favorite option of many developers and businesses.
The downsides of Mac are that it is expensive, and if you are a gamer, that it runs vastly fewer games. These days, Mac is a worse choice for gaming than Linux is.
Modify your system to allow ESU patches
Microsoft is selling
Extended Support Updates for Windows 7 users who can't upgrade for whatever reason. This is aimed at businesses, but you can still get ESU for Windows 7 Professional edition.
The cost of ESU is $50 for the first year, $100 for the second year, and $200 for the third year. If you can't afford this, there may be unofficial methods to obtain these updates.
Disconnect your Windows 7 computer from the Internet
This is a fairly simple option that doesn't need too much explanation. If you unplug your computer from the Internet, you can't get viruses from the Internet. As long as you don't pass around infected USB flash drives, then you are pretty much immune from viruses if you aren't connected to the Internet. Of course, for many people, this makes your computer unusable.
Keep using your Windows 7 computer as-is and risk malware
This is a terrible option, since it's very insecure to do this. This option maybe isn't too bad if you don't have any sensitive data whatsoever on your machine, and it's an option worth mentioning, but this option is not recommended.
Stop using desktop computers entirely
If you don't like newer versions of Windows, or Linux distros, or Mac, you need to be on the Internet, and you don't want to be insecure, then the only* option left is to stop using desktop computers entirely. For a lot of people, this is an unacceptable option, but many people can get away with living in the modern world only using phones and tablets, so it's worth mentioning.
Also, Chromebooks are great if you don't need to do anything on your computer except for browsing the web.
How to stay secure on any system
No matter what you choose, there are plenty of ways to stay secure online.
Blocking ads helps a ton due to malvertizing. The browser extension uBlock Origin (
Chrome,
Firefox,
Opera) does a great job at blocking ads. Additionally, it's a great idea to get a
hosts-file adblocker or a
Pi-hole to block ads before they even get to your system in the first place.
The browser extension HTTPS Everywhere (
Chrome,
Firefox,
Opera) will automatically redirect you to the secure version of a website, if there is one. This is a simple and easy way to improve your security while browsing the web.
If you are running Windows of any kind, getting an anti-virus is generally a good idea. One of the most commonly recommended ones is
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. A really nice feature of Malwarebytes is that it can run alongside other anti-virus software, so you can use Malwarebytes regardless of if you already have an anti-virus.
Don't forget that these can also be installed on smartphones, not just your desktop PC!
Conclusion
You should do something to stay secure. Whether you switch to a newer version of Windows, switch to a Linux distro such as Ubuntu, switch to a Mac, unplug your computer from the Internet, or throw it away, they all result in you staying more secure than if you continue to use your computer as-is. And once you've decided what system you're going to use, there are many ways to make it more secure.

Issue with restoring my Thinkpad W541! HELP please!
I recently purchased a Thinkpad W541 and it came installed with Windows 10 Pro. After some research i found out that this particular unit came from the factory with Windows 8.1 Pro. So wanting it to be factory fresh, i download the Lenovo Recovery Key software and submitted my ticket for which i was entitled to one free 8.1 Pro download for my machine. I used the software to download the ISO image and flash it onto my Sandisk ultra 32GB flash drive as instructed. The software said the USB flash drive flash was successful. So then i installed a brand new Samsung SSD drive into my laptop and proceeded to follow the Lenovo recovery procedure as described on their Youtube channel. It said to go into the BIOS and go to the startup menu. In the start up menu go down to the tab that says, "Optimize OS features", and make sure that was set to "Enable". Mine was disabled so i enabled it. Then it said to hit the F9 key to set all the other parameters to default. I did that. Then it said to click F10 to save all your changes and exit. Done. Then i inserted the USB recovery flash drive i created and turned the machine on. I kept pushing the F12 key to get to the boot menu and chose my USB Sandisk flash drive to boot from. All was going good. Then it got to a pop up menu that said are you sure you want to proceed to install the factory settings on your drive. If you do all information will be lost. i obviously clicked, "Yes" and it started to load the software. But about 30 seconds into the process, with the green progress bars slowly filling up, another small pop up window appeared saying that the recovery process had failed. Failed? It didn't even start hardly. I tried everything to get past that pop up window. Nothing worked. I tried turning off secure boot. Didn't help. Tried using Legacy mode instead of UEFI. Didn't work. It's like something is stopping the software from loading pass that point. The video on their Youtube channel is pretty thorough and walks you through each step. I did exactly what they said to do. Only problem is that their example in the video was for a windows 10 operating system restore. I'm doing 8.1 so i don't know why it would be any different. Can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong and maybe what setting i need to change if any. Thanks

Enterprise LTSC is a long-term support channel for Windows 10 Enterprise that only major receives updates every 3 years, rather than every 6 months for the other editions, if you prefer stability over the latest features.

Upgrading RAM and SSD in laptop for first time in my life - checking in to see if I am not missing anything in the process. Need help with RAM.
Country: Germany Laptop: Yoga 710-14ISK (Type 80TY) Processor: i5-6200U 2.3 GHz GPU: GeForce 940MX
Hardware manual Cost me 999€ almost 4 years ago. Wasn't happy with it at first, I like it now. Updates fixed it. It works nicely. It has a weak GeForce 940MX but it makes me happy. My problem - I have no space left. The Windows updates seem to be hogging a big chunk, then 2 bigger games Warframe and Cities: Skylines. And if I have to work with Inventor Autodesk or Visual Studio for uni again I will have a problem. I do have external drives. I just can't move anything else or delete anything more. I honestly don't understand where the space went, I can account for half of it. But it's not like 250GB were plenty. I am mainly upgrading the RAM because I didn't realize it's so cheap. 4 years ago 8GB seemed fine. Now - not so much.
Let's start with the easy part - the SSD.
Current SSD: LITEON CV1-8B256 256GB [Pic] Upgrade SSD: Crucial MX500 1TB @ 124€ from crucial.de or 127€ from amazon.de
My laptop does not support NVMe - as far as I understand it. So it has to be an M.2 SATA drive. There is just one storage slot. I was thinking if I should rather get the Samsung MZ-N6E2T0BW 860 EVO M.2 2 TB drive. Saturn has it at 319€. The price is just at some psychological pain barrier. And just in case I mess something up... big oof tears over lost 300€.
I'll get a USB3 to mSATA adapter, either Inateck 17€ or Sabrent 16.40€, insert the new SSD in there, then copy/mirror my current SSD with the Macrium Reflect software (free version). While my system is running. The site says this can be done this way. It worked on youtube where some guy did it. Then I take the new SSD form the adapter and put it into my laptop. Sounds easy.
But from research people recommend to copy the SSD while it's off. I could do that on an older netbook - but it's a slow a bit old pile of crap still running windows 8.1 I think, I don't trust it very much. And I don't have any other system to boot from a USB and buying a new version of windows ain't cheap either. (mine is OEM of course)
If I were to chose copying the system while it's off I would need 2 adapters - so I have to decide before the upgrade what to do. Some comments on this would be helpful.
Now the harder part, the RAM. I am not sure how to check the motherboard to see if it supports 16GB. Crucial.de says it does, it simply lists them as compatible when I put in my laptop version. I don't know how to check other compatibility specification like clocks and speeds. The hardware manual lists the following RAMs as compatible, none is over 8GB: RAM, 4GB D4 S M471A5143EB0-CPB5M30K59778N RAM, Hynix HMA451S6AFR8N-TFN05M30H35732N RAM, 4GB D4 S MTA8ATF51264HZ-2G1A25M30K59777N RAM, 4GB D4 S RMSA3230KE68H9F-21335M30K62038N RAM, 8GB D4 S M471A1K43BB0-CPB5M30K59786N RAM, Hynix HMA41GS6AFR8N-TFN05M30H35726N RAM, 8GB D4 S MTA16ATF1G64HZ-2G1A25M30K59784N RAM, 8GB D4 S RMSA3230KB78HAF-2133
Current RAM: SK Hynix 1x 8GB DDR4-2133 SODIMM [Pic], [Spec] Upgrade RAM: Crucial 16 GB
So I don't know which of the following 3 to pick: Crucial 16GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM @ 68€ Crucial 16GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM @ 70€ Crucial 16GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM @ 71€
I don't even understand what those numbers mean. It's not a clock frequency nor is the clock timings. It's the data rate in MT/s. HWinfo says my RAM is clocked at 1064MHz, 15-15-15-36 clocks. I am really unsure how to proceed from here and need a push in the right direction. Do I need to check compatibility with the processor as well? Also. I the info about the max supported RAM is inconsistent. Some say 8GB, other offer selling 16GB RAM for that model specifically.
It's a long read, sorry thanks for going through it. Any comments to either part of the post much appreciated.

RaceTrack Data Acquisition (RDA) 1.0 has been released for DR1/2.0
| Hi all, my data logging tool that I should have released 2 months ago , has finally hit the shelves: https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/racetrack-data-acquisition-rda.26829/ RDA Represents several weeks of full time software development which is released to you for free but with ability to donate if you find it useful and wish to support further enhancements. What is RDA? RDA is an application that can log telemetry from DiRT Rally (all stages/courses/vehicles) and DiRT Rally 2.0 (base release Cars/Stages and may work for DLC stages) to CSV, BIN, or MoTeC LD files. RDA also allows you to compare instantaneous and live Delta T and Delta V if you have already completed a stage/lap in the same vehicle. Your best stage/lap is saved on completion. Currently the live deltas are rendered only on a secondary monitor or beside the game windowed. https://preview.redd.it/52nya9e005z21.png?width=747&format=png&auto=webp&s=0a229162b83bffadac25aef9328321fbd361caa7 https://preview.redd.it/nuddwp4405z21.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=53481fa578e08e4b22b232ade194d0afc380dd41 https://preview.redd.it/psl5hrw405z21.png?width=2560&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f164c06539b001c87758ef4a64def1802961b3e Sample Videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCk9LqK-ZGo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1Ww5putxR8 ALL THE INFORMATION BELOW AND MORE IS AVAILABLE INSIDE THE PACKAGED PDF WHICH INCLUDES AN EULA Key Performance and Features RDA is very light weight; written in C++17 (importantly not Java or scripts) and does not utilize any extensive libraries such as boost, .NET, QT/wx and other UI libs to keep the data logging and loading performance impact completely negligible. You should not notice even a 0.1FPS drop when logging. In addition to using minimalist C++17, the application logs LD data to a temporary BIN file format instead of text/XML for ultimate performance and data safety in case of a system crash.(Recovering such data from BIN to LD currently can only be performed by the author “bn880” due to possible licensing issues.) Data and Frequency Precision RDA uses a comprehensive algorithm to save LD logs in maximum precision for all data channels without significant processing overhead. This is unlike any previous LD file data logger for other simulations. The frequency of the channels is also precisely calculated and saved based on an extrapolation algorithm and full passes of the collected data points. It is however crucial that you log at less than the full sim render FPS (about 80% or less of the FPS) or that your render FPS remains constant with Vsync if you want to have precise timing in logs. See PDF for more features... Quick Start / Installation Extract zip Extract the ZIP package into a folder where you have full privileges (read/write/full control), usually this simply means NOT in ProgramFiles (x86). Setup DiRT Rally UDP Set up DiRT Rally UDP output to your desired unique RDA port as per the How to set up DiRT Rally and DiRT Rally 2.0 UDP ports section. (inside PDF in package) Run RDA Run ./RDA/RaceTrack Data Acquisition.exe alongside your game to capture data logs and to view live Deltas once you complete a lap/stage once. (you can make yourself a shortcut to the exe for future use) Live Delta viewing is shown on the RDA main panel, and requires a secondary monitor or running the game in windowed mode with RDA visible on the same monitor. See Delta T and Delta V display. *** NOTE *** If you try to use RDA to log cars OR stages/tracks that are not supported no files will be generated, there will be no deltas shown, and you will need to restart RDA to resume logging. When data logging is working and live recording a stage/lap the Record button turns red. See *Figure 6 RECORD and STOP (+SAVE) Button states*. (inside PDF) You can find your logs with the File>Open Log Folder file menu entry. Install MoTeC i2 Pro v1.0.21.30 (not included in this package, you need to get it yourself) In MoTeC i2 Pro go to "File">"Project">"Open Project..." and open the supplied project: \MoTeC Projects\DiRT Rally\Project.mtcprj Open Log File in MoTeC Pro You can now open your recorded LD log file in MoTeC. As of version 1.0 detailed GPS track maps (innedrive/outer lines) are provided for Fourketa Kourva and Waldabstieg from DR. However you can generate these GPS maps in about 15-30 minutes with the correct procedure, and any stage you have driven will always be visible as a drive line with heading anyway. See *Track / stage map generation procedure*. Final Notes/Discord Enjoy, and remember to join Discord https://discord.gg/GKhwAcN if you have questions/comments/suggestions, and that you can Paypal [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) if you wish to support further feature enhancements. (shameless plug) NOTICE: RDA will not work in Windows 7 or 8.1 until further notice. This is due to Microsoft improperly describing their Universal Runtime to developers [it was stated to work since Windows Vista]. submitted by bn880 to dirtgame [link] [comments] |
Surface Tips and Tricks, everything I've learned as a longtime user
I'm a longtime lurker in this subreddit (and reddit in general). I've noticed some people having similar issues that I've had in the past so I decided I should make a ridiculously long post explaining everything that I've learned while using the SP1, SP3 and now SP4.
First of all make sure you have installed all the windows updates as some of these things are quite recent additions.
Pen Tweaks
There are a couple of simple things you should do to greatly improve your experience with the pen.
NOTE: Don't attempt to calibrate your stylus using the windows 'Tablet PC Settings' as its calibrated well by default and this tends to mess it up, same thing with touch. (EDIT: not everyone agrees with this point - some have found the calibration helpful, so might be worth trying out.. there is a reset button should you decide to revert it).
Open 'Settings', go to 'Devices' > 'Pen'
- Choose whether you are Left or Right handed, this also has an effect on the way palm rejection works (in windows 10).
"If you are right handed touch remains active to the left of the pen, but touch is accurately rejected to the right of the pen where your palm actually is."
see this thread, it also has a youtube video demonstrating it - I also recommend turning 'Show Cursor' to OFF: the N-trig pens used in the SP3 and SP4 have very good parallax and register accurately underneath the pen tip but the windows cursor tends to lag behind where it actually is, so turn it off as it can be misleading.
- There is a 'Surface' app which is automatically installed with the surface (or can be found in the store), in it you can configure and test the pen pressure curve.
- The handwriting recognition actually works really well, it can also be trained for your specific handwriting: Control Panel > Clock, Language and Region > Language > Click on 'Options' beside your language and then 'Personalise your handwriting'.
- Radial Menu is a tool that will give you a handy touch menu for various tools and shortcuts when you are using the tablet on it's own. (NOTE: the tool is incorrectly flagged as malware, and has not been updated for a while).
- Tablet PC Mouse is a similar tool and has a lot of other features, it may be a better choice though I haven't actually used it.
- Ntrig Wintab Drivers can be downloaded here should you need them.
Typecover Tweaks
I'd recommend 'double-tap and drag' with the touchpad. I think this is disabled in windows 10 by default.
- Open 'Settings > Devices > Mouse & Touchpad': Allow double-tap and drag.
If you are coming from a mac touchpad and wondering why the typecover's feels weird its probably due to the setting in mouse properties: 'Enhance pointer precision'. Switching this on turns on mouse-acceleration and makes the touchpad feel much nicer, however it makes using an external mouse feel horrible (especially if playing games).
Ideally you should be able to have separate settings for touchpad vs mouse, some people have requested this feature in windows feedback so please vote for them - its one of my biggest annoyances (note: might need to open these links in edge):
- [Windows Feedback Link 1](Windows-Feedback:?contextid=449&feedbackid=0db3a4ee-27d8-46c4-a9d2-236852a0ab16&form=1&src=2)
- [Windows Feedback Link 2](Windows-Feedback:?contextid=449&feedbackid=05ba65f1-b747-45ef-aca3-b5eb74ac7295&form=1&src=2)
Having to go to the mouse settings and changing this on and off is very annoying, for now I have a suitable workaround:
- Download the portable zip of Mouse Acceleration Toggler
- Create a shortcut to it named 'Toggle Mouse Acceleration' with the right-click properties of the shortcut 'Target' field set to C:\Path\To\Your\Folder\MouseAccelToggler.exe accel=toggle
- Then right-click on the shortcut and 'Pin to Start'.
- Whenever using the touchcover touchpad without an external mouse press the button in the start menu to toggle on mouse acceleration, and turn it off again when using a normal mouse.
NOTE: If you are using an earlier typecover that does not have the 'fn' toggle. You can use 'FN + CAPSLOCK' key combination to toggle the F1-F12 keys behaving as normal or as special keys.
Touch tweaks
In Tablet Mode (swipe in from right or open action centre and toggle 'Tablet Mode'), right-click on the taskbar and turn on:
- 'Show touch keyboard button' (handy if a program won't automatically open the keyboard)
- 'Show all notification icons' (useful for programs that minimize into a tray icon)
Settings > Devices > Typing
- Tick 'Add the standard keyboard layout as a touch keyboard option', this is a full touch keyboard which often comes in handy for less used characters, also has an 'ESC' key (Incase you are not aware, the touch keyboard has a button in the bottom-right corner which lets you switch the keyboard into various different layouts).
- Also tick 'Show the touch keyboard or handwriting panel when not in tablet mode and there's no keyboard attached'
I see a lot of people prefer the behavior of Windows 8.1 for touch (and I was a fan aswell), however with the recent updates in Windows 10, I much prefer Windows 10 for these reasons:
Desktop Mode:
- The modern apps open up in their own self-contained window.
- As before you can drag a window to the left or right edge of the screen to fill half, you can now also drag a window to the top-left, bottom-left etc for the window to fit a quarter of the screen.
- In the latest big update you can now resize two windows side by side in the same way you would do so in tablet mode, with both windows resizing at the same time.
- I prefer the swipe in from left for the task view and multiple desktops are great.
Tablet Mode:
- Recent big update means you can now drag the windows from the task view (swipe in from left), to either side of the screen and replace any split apps that are already there, this was my biggest issue with windows 10 in tablet mode compared to win 8.
Battery Tweaks
Great suggestion from jty1012. I am mostly using my surface plugged in at the moment, so have not needed to do any of these. However if you are out and about and are struggling with battery life, here are some general tips:
- Enable Battery Saver
- Dim screen brightness
- Disable Wifi
- Disable Cortana
- Disable Wifi When asleep
- Enable hibernate
- Enable cpu power management
- Background app permissions
- Disable windows hello
- Disable Flash
- Use an adblocker
These recent posts below explain in greater detail and are worth checking out:
Also according to
windows central, microsoft hopes to improve the SP4/Win10 sleep problems in a patch sometime early next year.
Recommended applications
I actually use the modern apps quite a lot, especially as they tend to work well when resized to a small width (eg. using reddit in a browser resized small usually ends up with a massive side-bar and unreadable posts and comments often indent too much and become super tiny), the modern apps also scale nicely at high resolutions.
Heres a list of some of the best applications that I've found work well with the surface (store apps and otherwise).
TIP:
/windowsapps is good for discovering newly released store apps.
Web Browser Choice - Chrome is what I use, mainly because of the extensions. Works well with touch, not great for battery life, looks a little out of place in windows 10. Has great developer tools. Some handy extensions are:
- Firefox looks nice, good developer tools, unfortunately has a pretty poor touch experience at the moment.
- Edge is really nice, quite fast and light, but lacking extensions and swipe forwards and backwards does not currently work. Has probably the nicest feeling touch and zoom in any browser that I've used (including any on phones), and actually has a really fast javascript engine with good ecmascript 2015 support, which is going to be open-sourced. Dev-tools are also pretty decent. If extensions aren't an issue for you its a pretty nice browser, otherwise I think they are coming sometime next year.
General Applications - Mail App (I like the default one, also think the most recent update now allows a unified inbox which a lot of people have been asking for).
- Readit / Baconit: Both really good universal reddit apps.
- Hacker News Reader
- Poki: my preferred pocket app, Latermark is also good.
- Twitter: not a big user but the official app suits me fine, others may prefer Tweetium.
- Facebook: not a big user either, current official app (actually made by microsoft I think?) is ok, I also think Facebook have a new universal app currently in development.
- Hyper for Youtube: good youtube app, have also heard good things about Tubecast.
- Unstream: I've tried a few twitch apps, this is my favourite.
- Groover Podcast: really nice universal podcast app.
- TuneIn Radio: nice radio app also handles podcasts
- Netflix: Official app works well (no chromecast unfortunately)
- Drawboard PDF: think it's installed by default, if not you should get it for PDF annotation.
- Wunderlist: nice app for keeping track of TODOS, works well cross-platform.
- Office: Windows store official Office Touch Apps are nice, Office 2016 also works nicely with touch. A good free alternative is Libreoffice, haven't used it in a while I think it has basic hidpi support but does not control well with touch (have to use a tiny scrollbar).
- Onenote Touch I prefer the touch version for my use, some tips:
- Go into the Settings > Options and 'Use touch to zoom' (its disabled by default for some reason)
- If Left-Handed you probably want to select 'Hide Page List' in the View Tab.
- The eraser has two modes that can be switched to either erase entire lines (default behaviour), or erase parts of the lines.
- Recent update added a 'Convert to shapes' toggle in the 'Draw' tab: it means you can draw squares/circles and other shapes in pen and they are automatically converted into proper shapes (that you can then select, resize, erase as usual).
- Please [vote for an option to disable auto-capitalization ](Windows-Feedback:?contextid=264&feedbackid=d16d6922-2ac0-4e4c-8082-66888931bb3e&form=1&src=2) in windows feedback (may need to open link in Edge) as it makes writing any programming syntax in a note incredibly frustrating.
- Onenote Desktop is also free to download and has a lot more advanced features you might like, like converting handwriting to text, recording audio and saving to pdf, printing etc (probably a good idea to have it installed aswell).
- Cover is a good comic reader
- Windows Snipping Tool: really handy built-in basic screenshot tool, also checkout ShareX for a more powerful alternative.
- Spotify official desktop program now supports hidpi screens and works well with touch.
- PassKeep pretty decent KeePass 2 compatible password manager, LastPass also has an app which seems decent.
- 7zip good free open source archiving tool which supports .zip, .rar and .7z etc. Also adds a handy right click context menu in explorer for zipping and unzipping files.
- f.lux changes your screen colour to be warmer late at night, though can cause flickering issues when using multiple displays, apparently SunsetScreen is a good alternative with more customization options (thanks tedharvey).
Art / Design Apps There are quite a few, here is a big list on
surface pro artist.
- Adobe Creative Cloud: Don't have a subscription myself, apparently they work well with touch (especially Illustrator) and Photoshop has recently updated with some more touch features heres a recent youtube video that covers them.
- Clip Studio Paint / Manga Studio: (currently on sale) has a really nice touch interface, works really well on the surface pro, you can also purchase some nice brush sets here.
- Mischief works really well, has infinite canvas and zoom, can even make the entire window semi-transparent to see programs underneath which is neat.
- Krita: really good free open-source drawing program, might need to install the wintab drivers, good brush set here.
- Inkscape: good open-source vector program, however does not support hidpi or have any real touch support, still nice though.
- Sketchable is a really nice to use windows store drawing app with notebooks you can set to various sizes like A4 (300dpi), has layers and other nice things however its pretty restricted unless you pay to unlock the extra tools.
- Don't really use any 3D software, but here's a recent post with zbrush on the SP4.
Music Creation Check out
Surface Pro Audio for lots of reviews of audio software and how they perform on surface. Some highlights that work well with the surface:
Games - Dolphin GameCube and Wii Emulator.
- PCSX2: Playstation 2 Emulator.
- AMIDuOS, Bluestacks: android emulators.
- Steam and Steam In-Home Streaming which works really well.
- uPlay, Origin, GOG Galaxy, Epic Games Launcher - which you will have to install if you're going to download Shadow Complex (which is an awesome metroidvania which is currently free).
- Official Xbox app, can stream games from Xbox One to windows 10.
- Some touch-screen supported games that run well on SP4:
- The Banner Saga
- Shadowrun: Returns, Dragonfall, Hong Kong
- Civilization V, Civilization Beyond Earth
- XCOM: Enemy Unknown
Development Hardware Accessories
Mice - Logitech MX Anywhere 2: my current mouse, works via bluetooth and you can pair it to three different devices and toggle between them with a button. Rechargable battery that lasts ages and can be recharged via USB. Has a nice gesture button, however the middle mouse button toggles between clicky mousewheel and free-scrolling mouse wheel, so if you want an actual middle-mouse button you need to use the logitech options software to set it to a side button.
- Razer Orochi: decent portable bluetooth gaming mouse, comfortable. Requires batteries which run out pretty quickly and need replaced. On the plus side you can also plug in it and use it as a standard USB mouse
- Sculpt Comfort Mouse super comfortable bluetooth mouse, cheap and also has a nice side gesture button, uses batteries which actually last a good while.
- Arc Touch Surface Edition really nice compact bluetooth mouse, uses batteries, downside is the fake middle mouse button which requires a double tap to middle click, and can be a bit iffy registering mousewheel scrolling.
Game Controllers - Steam controller: has a big learning curve but it's my current favourite, I use with the dongle but I believe it can work with bluetooth aswell (more latency however). Requires batteries but can also run off the MicroUSB. Check out /steamcontroller or woodsie on youtube for tips.
- Dualshock 4: If you prefer a traditional controller this is good, configure with DS4Windows or InputMapper. Works with bluetooth and can be charged via MicroUSB which is nice. Can even use the little touchpad as a trackpad (quite difficult though). Also most games use the xbox button icons in them so might take a while to get the hang of it.
- Xbox360 / Xbox One controller work great too, requires a USB slot for either direct wired controller or a wireless adapter, Xbox One controller requires a wireless adapter which came out recently.
- NES30 Pro don't own one but might make a nice portable controller for the surface.
Misc - Logitech Wireless Headset H800 decently priced bluetooth headset that folds up small and has a decent microphone. What is also nice is that you can charge it via MicroUSB (and can continue to use it while it is charging).
- Anker 3-Port USB Hub and Ethernet handy for extra USB slots, and ethernet should you need it.
- Razer Kabuto Mouse Mat thin portable mouse mat, can be used to clean your screen, and also fits snug as a screen protector between the surface screen and closed typecover.
- Evecase Sleeve nice big padded protective sleeve.
- RAM Universal X-Grip big 12" tablet grip should you want to mount your surface somewhere.
- Standard Figure 8 C7 Power Lead: The surface power brick uses a standard figure 8 connector, so if you find the length too small you can buy a longer figure 8 lead on amazon for really cheap.
Nice Wallpapers
Misc Tips
- The Xbox app has a handy 'Game DVR' that can actually be used in windows 10 in general for recording the screen. You can configure it in the Xbox app settings, and use the hotkey Win + R.
- You can use the program Synergy or Mouse without Borders to share your mouse and keyboard across multiple computers.
- If you have an iPad you can use Duet Display or TwomonUSB / TwomonAir (which also supports android) to use it as a second monitor for your surface.
- If you want to do the opposite and use your Surface as a second display for your PC, the best program I have found is Spacedesk, although I find it currently has too much latency for me.
- Note that: Duet Display, Twomon and Spacedesk install a special display driver to work, which may cause graphical issues with games or may also cause issues with miracast.
- Also in the past VirtualBox has caused Miracast issues, though that was Windows 8.1.
- If you are coming from a mac and are familiar with using the 'enter' key to begin renaming a file, in windows you can do the same using 'F2'.
AutoHotkey
Haven't used
AutoHotkey myself but it was suggested by
alR_ and I've seen it mentioned on this subreddit quite often. It's basically a tool that lets you set up macros/hotkeys for various handy shortcuts and key combinations. Again I'm not too familiar with it or how to set it up, but there is the potential to do some mad stuff like this:
Anyway I'm gonna end this here, I've already spent an embarrassingly long time writing this... enjoy!
EDIT: I'm trying to update this post with anything I've missed and some suggestions from this thread. Thanks for the great responses, glad you like it!
EDIT: Ok, I've added a fair bit of extra stuff, fixed some dodgy links etc...

My journey into Linux
Greetings my fellow penguiners.
For me, my beginnings are fuzzy. I don't recall a first time hearing about Linux or sorts. The most plausible first time for me was a brief section on the news way back in like 2008 or 2009. I remember a lazy tech section reviewing "other cool OS to try" and I clearly remember a compiz cube desktop, but I don't recall the mention of a distro, or even the mention of Linux itself.
Anyway, I'm a huge nerd, tinkerer and computer passionate since I have memory so it was matter of time before I went the ways of the penguin. I downloaded the iso of
*guess what* Ubuntu 12.04 and burned it on a Kingston DataTraveler using UNetBootin. Back in that time I had a Toshiba Satellite T215D laptop that I basically appropriated from my mom. It was awfully short on resources and Windows 7 Home Basic (that I ""hacked"" into Ultimate) but I had my first runs of it. I always ran the LiveCD, so I got used to sudo not asking password and files not being stored after a reboot. Even me a s a freshman that kinda loved Win7 I saw Unity really ugly.
After that I started to become a 80% script kiddie 20% tinkerer,
100% feeling "haxxorz 1337", all in windows 7 running in that laptop. I remember downloading the Speedtouch wifi cracker and installing a thing called "python" to run it. (In resume, Huawei routers of the Speedtouch series had their default WPA key based around the MAC address, so a simple python script could generate the key given the MAC address). I got interested on ricing Windows (back in the day you could do it to a pretty good extent). I (somhow) still have
a screenshot on how my desktop used to look like back then. Then on my script kidde mode I downloaded, burned and ran Kali Linux back when it was still Backtrack. I didn't understood a pinch of it, and I tried to "haxx" the wifi of the annoying neighbor by using a youtube tutorial.
Here is a funny anecdote of that time: the laptop was so extensively used by me that it became as cohesive and pristine as the Millennium Falcon, so the mousepad didn't worked (left click got messed up so it could not be pressed, even by tapping the mousepad ,so I disabled it in the BIOS and bought a genius wireless mouse). Backtrack had the thing that if I pressed the touch pad with my palm, the system froze. So my 17 year old me thought "well, this might get solved by installing it!". Aaaand I borked my Windows 7 install by some error during install that I didn't understood. Picture me getting Trinity Rescue Kit booting up to make a backup of my files on my dad's PC by samba mounting my recovery hard drive using an Ethernet cable while I prepare the migration to Windows 8.
I got into a bit of gaming so I planned on making my own PC build (I knew it was a thing, but I didn't knew about
pcmasterrace). Slowly gathered my stuff,
got it settled up and for testing the build I ran the LiveCD of Ubuntu on it. Perfect! It Worked!.... And I got Windows 8.1 on it. The laptop went back to my mom in a half functional state. Funny enough my first serious Linux experience was with my mom! I installed Ubuntu on a flash drive (yes, on a flash drive in fear of screwing up a potential recovery of yet another loss of data due my nitwit disk fiddling) and configured the BIOS so it will always boot from the flash drive. I became familiarized with some terminal commands, and occasionally I would test LiveCDs of other Ubuntu flavors on my own rig.
After that I started my most "obscure" phase... I became a Windows Fanboy. Mostly because I always felt like going for underdog things (my favorite music, TV series and all of that are pretty unheard among my generation and relatives so I kinda took that as a flag), so I said "there is a ton of apple fanboys. So then I will became a Microsoft fanboy!". That and because I had a Windows Phone. Windows 10 came in and became excited for it (although I updated a month before the free update year period ended). Around that time I got in college, and as expected I got into Computer Sciences. Because of my background I was miles ahead of my classmates (for example I studied logic gates in high school by my own by reading
The cartoon guide to COMPUTER SCIENCE, a 1983 book, while my classmates have only being doing Excell calculations) but still I was on the claws of Microsoft. Luckily the computer labs at college had Windows 10 AND Ubuntu MATE on them, and that was one of the few stones on my bridge to Linux.
One good day I got a bigger HDD for my rig because I was running out of storage. I kept the other hard drive plugged and wondered what I could do with it. The solution: partition it on two. One partition will hold up my games and music, and the other will have my very first and true Linux Install. I went for Mint and I wa so into Microsoft that I even got the B00merang Windows transformation pack. Then I distrohopped for a bunch of other distros: Ubuntu with Cinnamon installed on top, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Manjaro KDE, and some others for like a couple hours.
The keystone of this story is that for college I needed a laptop to do assignments. I went to my local Paw Shop and found a ThinkPad in excellent conditions and at a good price. And the first thing I did was nuking windows 7 off it and installing Manjaro KDE on it (I was a lot into Manjaro back then).
Now I'm a Linux installer via my freelance job of amateur IT guy, free software promulgator in the college, and a freaking nerd level 9000. In the end I'm writing this on that ThinkPad, now with Fedora, and my desktop rig after some updates now still has Windows 10 on it, but from almost half a year I have been running only Linux. Right now I'm on KDE Neon, and I'm taking big boy steps by installing Gentoo on a VM in one try.
Hailings from Mexico.
